Life's tough, Get a helmet

The first one you buy might be too small.
The label said it would fit toddlers 3+
Not so much
Maybe what's labeled your size isn't really meant for you....
Attempt two might be too big.
We are far from riding those gasoline powered bikes anyway.
Whew!
Let's dream big, but not get out of control now....
Third times the charm.
Made to fit those kids 5+
Yah...That's my boy!
And when you find the right fit,
Man, you can ride like the wind :)
Such is life. When you find your fit. You can really take off!
We are on our way!

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?

Wrong! It's not the crazy sponge guy with square pants....it's Tumblin' Monkeys!
(Please tell me you see what I'm seeing, though. We have yet to even watch Sponge Bob, and I'm OK with that)

Every time Tim leaves for the road, it takes a day or two to adjust. More so now, than the beginning of last year. Gavin understands very well that Daddy has gone to work, and won't be back for quite some time. He doesn't count over 30 yet, so it's difficult to count down days until we are at the last week. Even then, it's no guarantee that he will be home when the countdown is over. Oh, how I wish a local opportunity arises quick! Applications are being sent often with fingers and toes crossed!!

Anyway, Daddy left Tuesday morning and although Gavin is doing well, he just isn't his bubbly self. Mommy can tell he is just a sad boy. So against better judgement being his birthday is next month, we went to the store to pick out a new game. Meijer is having having an incredible clearance sale on toys, so the game cost me less than I would spend on lunch. (I'm packing peanut butter and jelly tomorrow for myself and this game was well worth the trade!) Oh, and Gavin also showed me ALL the toys he wants for his birthday while there.

Gavin can't get enough of this game! He helps me set it up by putting the colorful sticks into the slots which promotes fine motor skills.
It teaches and reinforces turn taking, (most of the time), the colored dice makes it easy to know which stick to pull, we count monkeys that fall,

and name colors on the dice after rolling and finding a matching stick. (Although there are only three colors).
It also gives us some mommy and me time :)

Great game!
One tip for you once you put it together, it doesn't go back in the box, and it is tall. So I put all the sticks and monkeys in a baggy and it fits perfectly down the center of the palm tree. Even better than it costing less than a five dollar footlong? It doesn't require any batteries or have any electronic gadgets to do the job. Again, it's a great game! The object is to collect the least number of monkeys when removing sticks....but how this is possible when it's just so much fun to make the monkeys fall down...I don't know.

Weather Buddy

After weather like this:

And Gavin dressing himself like this:

I remembered I purchased this a very long time ago after reading about it on my beautiful and clever cousin's blog...that she has unfortunately abandoned.

My Little Weather Buddy

It has a temperature sensitive thermometer but rather than degrees, it says warm or chilly or very cold. Each description has a corresponding attire for Buddy. Do I need to wear a coat today? A hat and mittens? What does Little Buddy say?

Now he can wake up each morning, look out his window, and *see* what he needs to pick out for the day. Because he doesn't think Mommy knows what she's talkin' about. It's pretty great. Now if only he could change his own diaper, (better yet, get potty trained), we would have some incredibly smoother early mornings.

10th Annual Quarry Party!

Wow!! What a good time we had as always. Being the tenth year of the event, many of us reminisced on how much the party has changed....evolved you might say. The first year was just nuts. I don't have pictures (if I did, they've long been lost...probably a good thing) but I'm willing to bet there were 30+ tents that weekend. And that is only those that stayed the night. Many came and went. It was almost like an open-to-the-public people filled quarry. It was a blast. Swimming all day, popping tops as desired, cliff diving, volleyball, outdoor games, drinking games, bonfires, food...it was another lifetime ago. The subsequent years were also good times. The same group has never failed to appear. We partied through rainstorms, and I mean, torrential downpours and we've camped through extreme heat, noise, and raucous.

And every year changes a little bit. Even more so the last few years as most of us have added additions to our families! Where once we stayed out near the tents, drinking and playing games, we now stay up in the wading pool, hanging out on rafts, (still enjoying a drink or two), taking pictures, feeding and catching fish, etc.

This year we even had an outdoor theater! Where once we played volleyball, diving and spiking, were *mounted* by dogs, bitten by sand fleas (or whatever bugs were jumping around) we now have miniature camp chairs set up in front of a sheet with a projector. Thank you West family! Please bring it back next year!

There was also promise of a pony this year. Seriously. The quarry party went from kegs and beer pong, to outdoor theaters and pony rides. Sadly, due to the heat, the pony was left at home. Another day pony...another day. Just goes to show that you never know what to expect, besides much earlier bedtimes for all, each year.

First thing you do when you arrive is take a gigantic relaxing breath and stare over the water and tell yourself...This is going to a great weekend.
Then you suffer through the construction of tent building in the scorching heat.
And if you are a member of the Compston family, you have the mansion tent, complete with above dirt bedding, lights and even security. (kidding on the security)

Then, you most definitely need to jump in the water to cool off.
But not before slathering on TONS of sunscreen.
Pool time!
I wasn't a fan of these giant tubes in the kiddie pool. Hercules Gavin thought he could lift them and was trapped under them on two occasions. I took them out of the pool for a while.

We've been outnumbered by the next generation for sure! Next year I may make a sign:
"Unattended children will be given an espresso and a free puppy."
I'm so kidding.
My little darling was no exception to the disappearing act. (I woke up at 5:30AM to an empty tent wide open.)  He felt the need to jump on the trampoline before dawn. Scary. We all keep our eyes on all the kids all the time. (when awake)
Catching up with friends you haven't seen since last July...or maybe two to eight years ago. But it's like no time has passed.
Taking the kids out for a boat ride.
Getting brave and jumping off the high diving board.
Scoping out the quarry water and looking for fish.
Some jump off the REALLY big cliff dive.
I did not do any such thing! *shiver*
We learned to play a little game we decided to name frisbee stick. It was actually lots of fun. The girls conquered the boys in the dark. The rematch the next day didn't go quite as well.
We picked flowers.
And ran around.
Pushing a gigundous stump on the bonfire that is thought to burn for a week, but actually turned into a hollow furnace and lasted only the first night.
Waving to the rafters!
Konking out for a midday nap.
Waking up revived and full of energy to do it all again!
Playing in the burning sand.
Ending each night with the kids around a movie, and the adults, ten feet away around the bonfire.
Good times, indeed!

Looking forward to year 11 :)

Wood County Fair

This past Thursday we made it to the Wood County Fair. I really don't have much to say about it. It's a county fair. There were lots of livestock, rides, games and fried food. You know, your typical county fair stuff.

When we arrived we headed straight past all the games and food to check out the animals.

Lucky for me, Gavin wasn't interested in watching the puppies. (that were for sale!)
Our two dogs are PLENTY!
We were able to watch a baby chick hatch.

Lemonade shake-ups are a must! Gavin picked out the jumbo size.
One ticket for an over-priced two-minute pony ride.
No picture.
Buddies
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's.....
The Tin Man!
Definitely plotting something.
As long as they stick together--plot away kids.
Stopping to sit (and jump) and eat some fried gooey cheese deliciousness and watch some dancing.
A noble attempt to win a real live fish.
But we had better luck fishing.
Play til you win games are my new favorite. Whatever the game. Gavin won a HUGE blue ball. He loves it still. I should have gotten two. (one as back-up when the first will eventually pop) He jumps on it, over it, rolls over it, throws it, kicks it, etc...
He was excited to ride the carousal....but not on a horse.
Racing to the next ride!
That he rode for the first time ever without an adult!

Good times!

And to sum up the fair experience, I leave you with this...
